Tours of Hillsborough Castle are available, but check online before visiting as house visits operate to a schedule. You can wander through elegant staterooms and see portraits from regal personages to humble pot-washers. Additionally the gardens, featuring ornamental landscaping and trickling streams, are a joy to wander around throughout the year. Built in the 18th century for the Marquess of Downshire adjacent to Hillsborough, the castle mirrors his intimacy with the village. Locals therefore treated him amicably as a neighbour rather than an overseeing lord. What began as a simple country home has become the heart of a scenic Georgian village and a royal favourite.
Since their acquisition, Historic Royal Palaces have opened Hillsborough Castle for everyone to explore. Over the next five years they will be investing over £16 million into an ambitious programme of capital projects and associated activities that will open the site to the widest possible audience, conserve and represent the heritage, explore its stories and engage communities and learners.
