Christmas Tours of Hillsborough Castle

The Square, Royal Hillsborough, Co Down, BT26 6AG
An image of a Christmas tree by the entrance to the Throne Room. The tree has lights and a gold crown with jewels.

About

Step back to 1850 where Hillsborough Castle is busy preparing for a special and fashionable family Christmas including the grand Twelfth Night ball and the Earl of Hillsborough's fifth birthday.

Arrive to discover the household staff preparing the celebrations. On a tour of the Castle with the parlour maid or footman, discover the origin of some of our long-standing Christmas traditions, as well as the those of the Christmas feast.

Children will explore the origins of pantomime by recreating a short extract from the story of Tom Thumb, which was performed, at Hillsborough Castle, for the Earl's fifth birthday in 1850; then learn about parlour games in the Drawing Room and find out what presents the Hill family have under their tree. The tour ends with a short meeting with Father Christmas, who gives each child a sugar mouse.
