Talk for NIFHS Lisburn Branch, CSM William J. McCutcheon MM (1917-45): a Lisburn soldier and the liberation of Europe by Dr James Frazer on Tuesday, 11 March 2025 @ 7.30 pm in the Bridge Community Centre, 50 Railway Street, Lisburn BT28 1XP.
This talk considers the life and career of ‘Bill’ McCutcheon who grew up in the Smithfield area of Lisburn.
He served in the 1st (Airborne battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles during the second world war. Gliding into France by air on D-Day,he later won the Military Medal for Bravery in the Normandy Campaign. He died in March 1945 during Operation Varsity,the crossing of the River Rhine which was a key barrier into Germany.
Dr James Frazer is the Research Officer at the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum.
